In
Arkansas, both Tyson and Con Agra have
thousands of chicken growers. The heat
of summer (100° or more) and the
ice storms of winter kill millions of
birds. Even that pales in comparison
to the cruelty of being crushed into
cages to be taken to processing plants.
Birds suffocate, fall out of the crates
on to the road, and may sit for hours
on the trucks, waiting to be processed.
Many birds are not stunned
or dead when they are bled, dipped in
boiling water, and plucked. They are
dragged through a fecal bath before
being cut up and packaged. Poultry workers
are not allowed to leave the line to
go to the bathroom. They suffer injuries
that become infected; because they are
often migrants and are minimum wage
employees, they are not treated. They
may become permanently disabled with
no medical care and no legal recourse.
Cattle
transported in and through Arkansas
have been held in trucks for 10 to 12
hours by the Highway Police at check
stations. They become frantic from lack
of water and rest, trampling and killing
each other. Tyson also has pig growers.
The abuses they suffer are unconscionable.
So
yes, will sign on.
