Our current
understanding of animals as sentient beings leaves us with no justification
for our society's long held belief that animals can be treated as means to
our own ends, and that their own interests deserve a lesser degree of
consideration than our own. The time has come to recognize that we can no
more justify the ownership and use of animals for food, fabric,
entertainment, labor, research, and sport than we can justify the ownership
of human beings as slaves. in the era of civil wars, our nation was faced
with a great moral crisis. Today we are faced with a similar challenge. The
political and social leaders of our time must ask themselves if they wish
history to remember them as brave visionaries, willing to challenge the
conventions of their time, or as cowards who allowed convention to justify
atrocity in their belief and practice.
